Back to Southern Africa

Known previously as Gold Coast, the tropical country of Ghana is located along the Gulf of Guinea on the West coast of Africa, and borders Cote d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Togo. The first African country to gain its independence from Britain, Ghana is today a country rich with natural heritage and a fascinating history and culture.

Tourists are progressively becoming more and more attracted to what Ghana offers, from dense tropical rainforests and nature parks, to spectacular sandy beaches and resorts, to the grim, but historically fascinating, slave trade dungeons dotted along the coast. In fact, one of West Africa's earliest known European-style buildings is El Mina, a fort used to protect the gold trading routes before the trade in humans began. Ghana is now using its tragic history to its benefit and tourism is becoming a major source of foreign income.

Tourists who are looking for a unique African experience will find it all in Ghana. Accommodation is good and varied, and the country offers a wide range of hotels suited for both the business and leisure traveler, and country hotels and park lodges are also popular. There are many activities on offer, with much of the action taking place within nature. There are forest trails and walks where a wide range of animals, birds and butterflies can be spotted, and crocodile ponds, coastal wetlands including Songor Lagoon and Panbros Beach near the capital Accra, and also the 100-year old Aburi Botanical Gardens which are home to thousands of fascinating species.

But besides the natural attractions, Ghana also offers other forms of entertainment and in the urban centres tourists can enjoy traditional dancing, discos, nightclubs and pubs, as well as watching local Ghanaian film at a cinema. Other cultural highlights include the numerous colourful festivals, while the museums showcase both modern Ghana and the tragic events of the slave trade. One of the cultural icons of Ghana is the drum, and visitors are invited to take drumming lessons with one of the local master drummers. Ghana is a great place to shop and tourists should not leave without having bought some of the famous, colourful cloth known as kente.

Visitors are required to have a valid passport and visas before their arrival in the country, as well as proving evidence of recent yellow fevr vaccinations. Ghana's currency is the cedi. Bottom of Form
