Geography: Ladybrand is the gateway to Lesotho, and is situated at the foot of the Platberg in the Eastern Free State about 35km from Clocolan.

History: Named after Lady Catharina Brand, the town was founded on the farm Mauershoek in 1867. Closely associated with many 'frontier' wars and skirmishes as well as the South African (Anglo-Boer) War, Ladybrand was granted municipal status in 1904, Today the town is a peaceful commercial centre for wheat and sunflower farming.

Arts and Culture: The area around Ladybrand, with its beautiful mountain scenery, is rich in archaeological, Stone Age, San and Basotho history. The town is well known for its sandstone cliffs in which visitors can see cave galleries of paintings by San, with interesting images of whales, sharks and dolphins. The best spot for visitors to have a look at these paintings is Rose Cottage Cave with its world-famous 'Tandjesberg Rock Art Site. Other sites of cultural interest include the lovely sandstone buildings in town that are declared provincial heritage sites, and visitors can enjoy the interesting displays at the Catharina Brand Museum.

Science and Nature: Some important and rare fossils have been discovered in the area, including the only known fossils of an animal thought to be the link between reptiles and mammals. The fossilised remains of this creature can be seen at the National Museum in Bloemfontein.

Sport: Visitors who enjoy a round of golf can do so at the course in Ladybrand, while outdoor enthusiast can enjoy good walking, hiking and fishing opportunities.

Did You Know? The earliest images of rock art found in Ladybrand are by an unidentified people and interestingly depict marine animals. Ladybrand is quite far from the ocean!
