Geography: Lying in the heart of Lejweeputswa (formerly the Free State Goldfields), Welkom is about 250km from Johannesburg and 155km from Bloemfontein. It is situated in the northwestern part of the Free State.
History: Welkom was founded in 1947 following a major gold discovery the year before on the farm St Helena. It is one of the few completely pre-planned towns in the world and Sir Ernest Oppenheimer's design in which the residential, mining and industrial sites blend to create an attractive garden city have been strictly adhered to. More than a million trees were planted in the town! The town received municipal status in 1961 and was declared a city in 1968, which makes it South Africa's youngest town.
Arts and Culture: There are many interesting cultural sights in the town to keep the traveller busy. The Museum of Welkom at the public library has exhibits displaying the discovery of gold in Welkom, the town's history as well as the natural environment of the town and its surrounds. There are numerous monuments that visitors can uncover including the Aandek Monument, the Afrikaans Language Monument, Joanne Pim Monument, WWII Monument, Voortrekker Memorial, Dog Monument, Old Indaba bluegum tree and the MOTH Memorial!
Science and Nature: The town is the hub of the Free State goldfields and presently has 13 gold mines in operation. Other than gold and uranium Welkom's industry produces steel, lumber and beef. The town boasts some lovely natural areas where visitors can picnic and take in the surrounds. The beautiful flamingos of Welkom can be seen at the Flamingo Pan, which is also an attractive scenic recreational area, while relaxing in Central Park, Peter Pan Park, Van Riebeeck Park or West Park will provide some quality relaxation time.
Entertainment: There is much to keep travellers entertained in Welkom. Every second Saturday of the month, shoppers can haggle for bargains at the North Park Flea Market. If you are feeling energetic then the 200-step climb to the top of the Welkom Publicity Clock Tower will provide a rewarding view of the entire area. Underground tours of some of the deepest and riches mines can be organised through the publicity association, and these include watching gold being poured. Lovers of theatre can enjoy the town's best thespians and ballet dancers who grace this modern Ernest Oppenheimer Theatre complex.
Sport: Welkom has excellent sporting facilities and the Rovers Club offers rugby, soccer, netball, tennis, hockey, cricket, bowling and snooker. One of the main attractions in Welkom is the Phakisa Raceway. Consisting of a high-speed oval and a well-designed conventional track, the racetrack hosts an annual international Motorcycle Grand Prix.
