Geography: Midrand is situated roughly midway between Johannesburg and Pretoria on the N1 highway. It is one of the country's fastest growing regions and is ideally located within easy reach of two major highways, the OR Tambo International Airport (formerly Johannesburg International), as well as its own Grand Central Airport.
History: Midrand is a relatively new area which developed out of the old Halfway House, so called because it was situated exactly halfway between Johannesburg and Pretoria. Built around the N1, halfway between Johannesburg and Pretoria, Midrand is an accurate reflection of the current economic expansion of Gauteng. Home to large-scale industries such as textiles and motor vehicles, it is a superbly located business venue. Today Midrand is one of the busiest industrial and commercial centres in the country.
Arts and Culture: The South African Mint moved to Midrand in the early 1990's. Visitors can also have a look at St Saviour's Anglican Church, which was removed brick by brick from its original 1860's location in KwaZulu-Natal and moved to Midrand in 1983. A major coup for both Midrand and Johannesburg was the announcement that the Pan African Parliament would choose Gallagher Estate as its plush seat for the next few years, until a permanent venue has been acquired.
Science and Nature: Bird lovers will enjoy the Glen Austin Bird Sanctuary and Lory Park Zoo, which houses one of the biggest displays of exotic birds in South Africa.
Entertainment: Midrand is home to Gallagher Estate, which houses many interesting festivals, exhibitions, trade shows, conferences and music concerts. Night clubbers will enjoy Who Zoo nightclub, where many of the best local and international DJs have spun their records, while review and supper shows can be seen at Richard Loring's Sound Stage.
Sport: The Kyalami Race Track, South Africa's most famous motor racing venue, is within close proximity to Midrand.
