Geography: The small trade and transport centre of Mkuze is found along the Elephant Coast in the northern part of the Kingdom of the Zulu.

History: The town is named after the Mkhuze River, one of the Elephant Coast waterways that feed into the St Lucia wetlands.

Arts and Culture: The town has a rich Shangaan heritage and it is said that at Ghost Mountain there is a mysterious grave site of the old Shangaan kings, whose bodies were carried here from Mozambique for burial. The mountain is said by locals to be haunted. Other sites of cultural interest include the battle site on Ghost Mountain and visitors can experience the traditional lifestyle and crafts of the KwaJobe community at the Zulu cultural village in the Mkhuze Reserve.

Science and Nature: Mkuze is well known for its nature reserves including the Mkhuze Game Reserve, declared as a protected area in 1912. The 40,000ha reserve is fascinating as it has, unlike other reserves in the area, flat grasslands, fossil pans, wetlands and sand dunes. It is part of the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, which has recently been declared a World Heritage Site and is a mecca for bird lovers, with more than 400 bird species to be seen! The reserve has an amazing diversity of natural habitats, from the eastern slopes of the Lebombo Mountains to stretches of savannah, as well as riverine forest.

Entertainment: The reserve offers excellent birding and game-viewing opportunities, while viewing game from one of the hides proves to be very popular. Visitors to the reserve can enjoy night drives, guided walks and swimming.

Sport: For the energetic traveller, the two hiking trails in the area namely the Mkuzi Fig Forest Walk and the Mkuzi Game Reserve Hike, will challenge and inspire. 10km north of Mkuze is Lake Jozini, famous for its excellent tiger fishing.

Did You Know? The Zulu name for Ghost Mountain is iTshanenei (the place of the small stone). Local tribesmen believe it to be haunted, and they say that strange lights and even stranger sounds emanate from it!
