Geography: This small village lies high in the mountains amidst forests, south of the N4 between Waterval-Boven and Nelspruit.
History: The old boom town and former mining village takes its name, " Hope of the Cape", and refers to the hopes of the early gold prospectors. Gold was discovered here in 1882 and as prospectors needed a place to stay, the village was established. Little came of the discovery but it did provide the impetus for the discoveries at Barberton.
Art and Culture: Kaapschehoop is home to many artists and offers numerous restaurants, a conference centre and a variety of accommodation choices. There are ghostly tales that circulate in the town and some of these include the ghost of a shaky old woman, said to have been an alcoholic who murdered her husband with an axe during a fit of jealous rage. Others include the elderly woman that haunts the porch of the Green Venus, as well as the audible screams of a child crying for help.
Science and Nature: A trail leads to spectacular views over the De Kaap Valley, sometimes called "The Valley of Death". Interestingly, the village has given its name to a rare cycad found in the area. Also of interest to nature lovers is the fact that the rare blue swallow nests in the area. The macabre looking rock of formations in the valley are known as the "Duiwelskantoor" (Devil's Office) and visitors will be amazed at the shapes of the thousand or so sandstone rocks.
Entertainment: Visitors can try their lucky by panning for a gold nugget in the river, or just take a lovely scenic drive through the area.
Sport: There are many scenic hiking trails that those travellers wishing to expend some energy can challenge themselves to.
Did You Know? Gold is virtually indestructible, is completely recyclable and almost immune to the effects of air, water, and oxygen. The precious metal will not tarnish, rust, or corrode.
