Geography: Machadodorp is situated on Mpumalanga's Highlands Meander close to the town of Waterval-Boven.

History: The town was established on the farm "Geluk" in 1894. It was named after Joachim Machado, the Portuguese engineer who first surveyed the railway route between Pretoria and Delagoa Bay. The town is rich in South African (Anglo-Boer) War history, and because it was built along this railway route, it was fiercely contested in the final months of the war. Paul Kruger, president of the Boer Republic, actually spent some time in the town before he went into exile. Long since returned to a state of peace, Machadodorp is today known for its wonderful climate and superb scenery.

Art and Culture: Visitors to Machadodorp can see a memorial to the fallen soldiers of the South African (Anglo-Boer) War, while some of the architecture of the town will also delight. The Dutch Reformed Church, designed by Gerhard Moerdijk, is a lovely structure.

Science and Nature: The naturally hot springs, found about 2km from town, are said to have healing properties. The mineralised water has a high sulphur content and is slightly radioactive and it is said to help relieve gout and rheumatism. Nature lovers will revel in the wonderful highlands scenery and the area is home to some most rare species of birds and spectacular wild flower displays.

Entertainment: Much of the entertainment that visitors can take part in is based outdoors and includes adrenalin pumping activities such as paragliding, hang-gliding, hot-air ballooning and climbing up and abseiling down the cliffs. One of the best ways to experience the area, and a fun-filled activity at the same time, is to jump aboard the historic Oosterlyjn Express steam train and retrace President Kruger's route between Machadodorp and Waterval-Boven and enjoy a lunch in one of the charming little pubs.

Sport: Besides the adventure sports and outdoor activities, Machadodorp is best known for its excellent fly-fishing, in some of the country's most well-stocked and beautiful rivers and streams. There are plenty of brilliant fishing spots along the Elands River and at the Centenary Dam.
