Geography: The appropriately named town of Middelburg lies halfway between Pretoria and Lydenburg.
History: Originally known as Nasareth, Middelburg was established on the farm Sterkfontein in 1866 and renamed as such because it marked the halfway point between the two "republics" of Pretoria and Lydenburg. Today Middelburg is a large farming and industrial centre and is an important stop on the railway line that transports coal from Ermelo to Richards Bay.
Art and Culture: Middelburg has much to offer the tourists with an interest in heritage, culture and art. The provincial heritage site of Meyer's Bridge dates back to 1896 and is one of the few remaining old stone bridges built by the Transvaal Republic. Visitors will be intrigued by the historical village of Botshabelo, which has many restored buildings including Fort Merensky, a Berlin Missionary Station built by the Reverend Alexander Merensky as a haven for converted Pedi. Of interest at the village is The Parsonage, former houses now part of a museum complex, churches, and the old dining hall. The Ndebele Village, part of Botshabelo Museum Complex, shows visitors the traditional, yet living culture of these people. On the site of a former concentration camp is a Memorial Museum to the women and children who died here during the South African (Anglo-Boer) War, while for those interested in arts and crafts there are some interesting curio shops.
Science and Nature: Middelburg is known as the 'Stainless Steel Capital of Africa' owing to its intense mining of this metal.
Entertainment: There are excellent day and overnight hikes including the Cycad Bobbejaan, which is a 9-day adventure. Close to town visitors can relax and unwind at the Kruger Dam, with its water sports facilities, while in town cinemas, restaurants and interesting shops will keep the whole family entertained.
Sport: The outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy sailing, rowing and fishing at the Middelburg Dam, while the golf fan can have a round at the Middelburg Golf Club.
Did You Know? "Bothshabelo", the name of the historical village and museum, means "place of refuge".
