Geography: The popular health and holiday resort of Bela Bela is situated about 100km north of Pretoria.

History: Previously known as Warmbaths, Bela Bela is synonymous with the town's world famous hot-water springs. The springs were known to tribes many hundreds of years before being "discovered" by settlers, and the Tswana of the region named the area Bela Bela, meaning "he who boils on his own". Local legend has it that it was two hunters who first saw the spring in the 1860's. Jan Grobler and Carl van Heerden were out hunting when they saw steam rising from the ground and later Van Heerden built a farm around the springs. Soon the area was well known for the therapeutic warm spring waters, and after a visit by President Burgers in 1873, the state decided to buy the farm and develop a health resort around the springs. Today, Bela Bela is still well known for its hot springs and more than a million tourists visit the town each year making it a popular tourism destination.

Arts and Culture: The rich history of Bela Bela is well documented through its numerous monuments, museums and places of cultural interest. Some of these, most of which are open to the public, include a British blockhouse built during the South African (Anglo-Boer) War, a Moth Commemoration Monument and the Peace Monument.

Science and Nature: The reason for the town's existence is the hot mineral springs. The springs produce about 22,000 litres per hour with a temperature of around 53<\#176>C and the water is rich in sodium chloride, calcium carbonate and other salts that are believed to have healing properties. Besides the springs, the area is home to a number of game reserves, including the wetland areas next to the Bospoort stream and Klein Kariba River. The game and nature reserves, popular with tourists, include Mabula, Mabalingwe, Bonwa Phala, Kunkuru and Sondela.

Entertainment: Bela Bela has much to offer the tourist looking for a fun-filled time. Many visitors will be in town for the hot springs and the Hydro Spa offers saunas and treatments for luxurious pampering. The annual Bela Bela Tourism Festival has popular singers, country stalls, marathons and cycling races and is growing in popularity year by year. Other activities include game drives, 4x4 and quad bike trails. For a real adventure, visitors can try parachuting or even taking a magnificent trip in a hot-air balloon, while for those looking for something a little more glitzy, the Carousel Casino and Entertainment World is within close proximity. The town also has a cinema complex showing the latest releases at the shopping mall at the Waterfront.

Sport: Sports fans will be kept busy in Bela Bela, as the town offers facilities including a golf course, tennis, squash, netball and jukskei courts as well as a rugby field. Water sports enthusiasts and fishermen can enjoy the facilities at the Warmbaths Dam, 8km from town.

Did You Know? The Romans were the first to realise the value of naturally hot mineralised water and built the English city of Bath around three natural springs about 2,000 years ago.
