Geography: The Lowveld town of Hoedspruit lies in the Valley of the Olifants, nestled between the magnificent Drakensberg and the Kruger National Park.
History: It is not clear how the town acquired its name, which means "hat stream", but it is said that after a long trek over the mountains into the heat of the Lowveld, one of the pioneers removed his hat and threw it into the cool waters of the Sandspruit River. Whatever the origin, the town was surveyed in 1869, with the first post office opening in 1890. Today Hoedspruit is a small service centre for the Kruger Park area, as well as being home to an important SANDF airbase.
Arts & Culture: Tourists who find themselves in Hoedspruit can get a feel for the culture of the town by visiting the African art galley, Information Centre and Museum displaying traditional hunting artefacts at the Monsoon Gallery, while the daily lives of a true Shangaan tribe can be experienced and enjoyed by the whole family at the Nyani Tribal Village.
Science and Nature: Being in such close proximity to the Kruger National Park means that Hoedspruit is a centre that focuses on animals, and the Hoedspruit Research & Breeding Centre is one of the leading private research and breeding facilities for endangered species. Here the animals, especially cheetah, are both bred and rehabilitated. Other interesting rehabilitation centres and reserves include the Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre for birds, and the fascinating Swadini Reptile Park. The borders of the game estates in the area are mostly open to the Kruger National Park and this enables the wild animals to move freely across the area.
Entertainment: Hoedspruit is an excellent ecotourist destination and the game lodges and private reserves are a gateway to the Timbavati Game Reserve and the Kruger National Park. Visitors can enjoy the game-rich countryside, and birding, hiking and safaris are always popular and great fun. Other interesting forms of entertainment include a fascinating tour of a silkworm farm at Bombyx Mori that showcases the entire silk production process, and aslo gives visitors the opportunity to purchase exquisite silk products.
Sport: Outdoor enthusiasts will revel in the rafting, abseiling and hiking opportunities, and the wonderful scenery will keep mountain bikers and 4x4 drivers quite satisfied. A wonderful way to get a bird's-eye view of the area is to go on one of the microlight flights that are on offer.
