History: Named after the Voortrekker leader Louis Trichardt, who camped in the area for more than a year in the 1860's, the town is today a centre for large-scale farming.
Arts & Culture: The area is rich in culture and history, and tourists can enjoy the San rock art at Medike in the Sand River Gorge as well as at Lajuma. For a glimpse into the lives and culture of the Shangaan people, visitors can do the arts and craft route in the Elim area. The region is well known for its textiles and wood carvings, many of which can be bought by tourists. For a more modern take on the history of the town, the open-air Schoemansdal Museum has exhibits commemorating the pioneering history of the area. Nearby the museum is a cemetery where Voortrekker leader Andries Potgieter is buried. Another interesting visit is to Stonehenge, a private residence that is one of the country's finest examples of 18th century architecture. It has been declared a provincial heritage site and can be found in Snyman Street.
Science and Nature: This area of the Soutpansberg is subtropical, which means that the town of Louis Trichardt is always lush and green, and tropical fruits such as litchis, bananas, mangoes and nuts are available in abundance. The Ben Lavin Nature Reserve offers beautiful views and fascinating archaeological sites, as well as many animal, bird and tree species. There are dams in the area that provide recreational facilities and these include Albasini and Middle Letaba.
Entertainment: Excellent fishing, superb birdwatching and magical trails leading through the forest at the Hanklip Picnic Site and Forest, are some of the great entertainment options available to the whole family.
