Geography: Modimolle is situated in the Waterberg District and is northwest of Bela Bela.
History: Modimolle, meaning "place of the spirits", is named after the prominent hill, which is regarded by the locals as holy. The original name of the town "Nylstroom" has an interesting story attached to it. Nyl is the Afrikaans word for the Nile, and it is here that in 1886 some intrepid, albeit ill-informed Voortrekkers thought they had arrived in Egypt! Today the town is the commercial centre of the Waterberg district and is well known for its table grapes and soft fruits.
Arts & Culture: Visitors can enjoy numerous cultural and historical sites including the provincial heritage site of JG Strijdom House and Museum where the former statesman lived for 20 years as well as numerous historic churches like the Reformed Church built in 1929.
Science and Nature: Bird lovers will enjoy Nylsvley Nature Reserve, where up to 200 species can easily be spotted. Donkerpoort Dam supplies water to the town and is a popular fishing spot.
