Geography: Mookgophong is about 160km north of Pretoria along the N1 and lies at the foot of the Swaershoek Mountains.
History: Originally known as Naboomspruit, named after the huge candelabra tree, the naboom, the new name of Mookgophong essentially has the same meaning. The settlement dates back to 1886 when it was a trading area for the Pretoria to Pietersburg mail coach service. It was only after the discovery of tin and other minerals that the town really developed. It became a boom town with all the usual characters - the shop owners, artists, cabaret singers and prospectors. A later discovery of platinum really boosted development and the town was granted municipal status in 1938. Today the town is known for its hot springs, mixed farming and holiday resorts.
Arts and Culture: Visitors to the town can have a look at the South African (Anglo-Boer) War memorial close to Boekenhout, while in Nylsvley Nature Reserve there is a site that marks a train derailment where several Boers died and were buried.
Science and Nature: Mookgophong is surrounded by numerous nature reserves and these offer opportunities for lovers of the outdoors. The unique Waterberg flora of this beautiful area can be enjoyed, while the Nylsvley Nature Reserve, only 15km out of town, offers wonderful scenery and bird life.
Entertainment: Much of the entertainment in the area is based on nature, and there are several interesting motor routes also allowing visitors to explore the scenic district. 4x4 trails and horseback safaris are also very popular. Visitors who are in town in September can enjoy the festivities of the annual flower festival.
Sport: Anglers will enjoy the Frikkie Geyser Dam and the Doorndraai Dam Nature Reserve.
Did You Know? The beautiful silvery-white metal platinum was "discovered" in South America in 1735.
