Geography: Polokwane, the capital of Limpopo Province, lies midway between Pretoria and the Zimbabwe border.

History: The town, originally known as Pietersburg, was founded in 1884 on the farm Sterkloop and named after General-Commandant Piet Joubert. It officially became a town in 1886, and gained municipal status in 1903. 2002 saw the name change to Polokwane, and today the modern town is not only a manufacturing and commercial centre, but also has strong agricultural and mining interests.

Arts and Culture: Visitors to Polokwane can enjoy some very interesting cultural and historical sites. There are numerous museums in town, namely the The Hugh Exton Photographic Museum and the excellent Bakone Malapa Open-Air Museum, where the exhibits cover the cultural history of the town. At the Polokwane Museum, a provincial heritage site, there are exhibits that detail the history of the city and the environment. At the Bush Craft trading store, visitors can buy curios and traditional wares that are made by local craftspeople. Travellers interested in the history of gold mining in the country, can see the Eersteling Monuments, which mark the place where the country's first gold crushing took place.

Science and Nature: The area will enthral nature lovers. The municipal game reserve has over 21 species of game, while the Moletzie Bird Sanctuary hosts 250 species of birds. Take a drive to Magoebaskloof for spectacular scenery of mountains, waterfalls and lakes, while the Polokwane Bird & Reptile Park holds many interesting demonstrations. For hunters, Polokwane is considered a great hunting destination.

Entertainment: There is much to do to keep travellers to Polokwane entertained. The city offers a cinema complex, while a tavern tour and visits to cultural villages can be arranged. Various water sports can be enjoyed at the Dap Naud<\#233> and Ebenezer Dams near Magoebaskloof.

Sport: Polokwane offers excellent sports facilities including an Olympic size swimming pool, tennis courts, a golf course and squash courts.
