Geography: The town is situated at the feet of the Ysterberg west of Bela Bela. It is surrounded by the Witfonteinrand and Boshofberg and has the majestic Kransberg in the background.
History: The town developed as result of rich iron ore that was discovered here in 1919. It is for this reason that the town is named Thabazimbi - it is the Tswana name for "mountain of iron". As the mining increased, so the town developed around it, and was officially proclaimed in 1953. By 1975 it had attained a town council.
Arts and Culture:
Science and Nature: The Marakele National Park has become a place of sanctuary to a variety of wildlife, including rhino, buffalo, elephant, leopard, wild dog and the largest colony of endangered Cape Vultures in the world. Visitors can also enjoy the revamped safari tent camp and bush camp with its new camping facilities.
Entertainment: There are activities to suit everyone, and most of these are nature based. 4x4 trails, hunting, camping, game and bird viewing and mountain bikers will find the attractions very appealing.
Sport: Thabazimbi is well known for its hiking trails and mountain climbing opportunities that take travellers through the wonderful bushveld.
Did You Know? The iron mine has the largest shaft in Africa, and more than 2 million tons are mined from it each year.
