Geography: Tzaneen, the second largest town of Limpopo, is situated at the foot of the Wolkberg Mountains on the banks of the Letaba River and is about a four-hour drive from Johannesburg and an hour's drive from the Phalaborwa gate of the Kruger National Park.

History: The busy town of Tzaneen can trace its origins back to 1903 when the Transvaal government acquired land to use for experimental farming and agricultural research. The name is either derived from the word "tsaneng" (gathering place) or "tsana" (basket of hills), and interestingly, the town's coat-of-arms has an image of a basket on it. Today this area is the rail, commercial and administrative centre for the Lowveld, and is home to some of the most succesful farms in the region.

Arts & Culture: Visitors to Tzaneen can see the John Buchan Memorial that overlooks the Ebenezer Dam. The Tzaneen museum should not be missed and visitors can see exhibits that show weapons, pottery, beadwork and a large collection of pole carvings, as well as royal drums of the Rain Queen Modjadje.

Science & Nature: The subtropical climate of Tzaneen has made the area an important fruit and vegetable-producing centre. Some of the biggest crops of avocados, mangoes, tea and tomatoes grown in South Africa come from the fertile soils of the Letaba Valley and this bounty is increased with oranges, pawpaws and delicious kiwi fruit. It sounds like a huge fruit salad!

Entertainment: Visitors to Tzaneen can enjoy the facilities at the Tzaneen Dam Nature Reserve, which is always popular with anglers and campers, while the Tsonga Kraal Museum, within the Hans Merensky Nature Reserve, has historical and entertainment value. The Debengeni Waterfall offers a fun day out for the whole family, where walks and picnics can be had close to the tumbling waterfall. The 40km drive that circles the escarpment and skirts the Great Letaba River offers spectacular views of the Magoebaskloof and George's Valley and the magnificent Wolkberg is almost guaranteed to be covered in mist and cloud.

Sport: Water sports are very popular at the Tzaneen Dam, while the nearby Hans Merensky Golf Course is one of the finest in the country.

Did you know? Debengeni means "place of the big pot" and the waterfall is named as such because of the large pool into which the water tumbles.
