Geography: The lovely mountainous area is about 50km northwest of Modimolle. It is situated in the Waterberg Mountain Range, along the Mokolo River.
History: This area, on the fringes of the Botswana border, has always been a remote wilderness that has been the dwelling of adventurers, gunrunners, outlaws and pioneers. The Waterberg, or 'water mountain', was named as such by the early pioneers who were amazed by the glistening surface of the mountains. The little central town of Vaalwater is well known as a place to pick up supplies before heading out into the real bushveld.
Arts and Culture: The Waterberg has been the dwelling place of humankind for thousands of years, from Stone-Age to modern people. There is evidence of San, Khoe herders and Iron-Age people in the area and all have left an interesting cultural legacy in the form of paintings or iron smelting furnaces. The area is an important San rock art site, and visitors are able to have a look at some of these. The Rhino Museum devoted entirely to the conservation of the rhinoceros and the Waterberg Museum provides its fascinating information on the cultural history of the area, dating from a million years ago to the time of the first white pioneers. The village is home to a most charming little church, the Church of St John the Baptist. It was designed by the famous architect Sir Herbert Baker and its thatch roof can cover up to thirty church-goers.
Science and Nature: Nature lovers will find the area fascinating as it is home to the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, declared as such by the United Nations, and includes the protected areas of Masebe Nature Reserve, Moepel Farms, Mokolo Dam, Marakele National Park, Lapalala Wilderness and the Touchstone Game Ranch. Visitors can view spectacular rocks, with their red, purple and orange hues, rising majestically out of the bushveld.
Entertainment: The Mokolo Dam and Nature Reserve is popular with anglers and is a lovely picnic spot. An interesting concept is the idea of Photographic Hunting, in which hunters are allowed to "shoot" the animals in a much more rewarding way.
Sport: Outdoor adventure types will love the activities on offer. Some of these include guided bush walks, day and night game drives, mountain bike trails, bird-watching, boat cruises and hiking.
Did You Know? Several peaks of the Waterberg exceed 1,500m above sea level.
