Back to South Africa

One of the least populated of the South African provinces, the Northern Cape is known for its beautiful and serene semi-desert landscapes, diamond diggings and fascinating San rock art galleries, and offers tourists a unique experience. It is a large stretch of land covering a third of the country, and has a hot and dry climate that sends the thermometers soaring!

The Northern Cape is noted for its wildlife parks and reserves, and some of these include the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, a magnificent unspoilt stretch of semi-desert and at 3.7 million hectares is one of the largest nature reserves in the world. Accommodation in the park consists of traditional rest camps, which allow the tourist to experience this piece of Africa in all its sublime beauty. Other natural highlights of the Northern Cape include the Augrabies Falls National Park, the place where the Orange River thunders through a ravine and drops into a huge pool 56m down. This is the sixth largest waterfall. Also of importance is the Richtersveld National Park found in the north of the province very close to the Namibian border. Although the province is hot and dry, it is thanks to the waters of the Orange that there are now villages and towns on the banks of the river that specialise in agriculture including dates, Lucerne and grapes. And then there are the miracles of nature - the wild desert flowers exploding into colour in Namaqualand, soon after the highly anticipated rains arrive.

The Northern Province's capital is Kimberley, a town synonymous with the mining of diamonds and the ultra-wealthy mining magnates who changed the economic and social history of the country forever. The town is home to the largest man-made hole in the world, the diamond mine known as the Big Hole, while the streets of the town with their charming architecture and pleasant museums take one back a few steps in time. The Northern Province offers tourists a range of accommodation options depending on the activity, and all in all offers tourists a unique glimpse into a very different part of South Africa.
