Back to Southern Africa

The Kingdom of Swaziland, one of only two Kingdoms in southern Africa, is also the smallest country in Africa. The landlocked Kingdom is still truly traditional and the friendly Swazis seem to enjoy life at the max. The traditional ceremonies such as the Ncwala or 'first fruits' ceremony take place in December or January, while the Umhlanga held in August or September, is a showcase of potential wives for the king. The country is divided into the mountainous highveld of the west, the fertile middleveld, the bush-covered Lowveld in the centre and the Lebombo Mountain region in the east. The attitude towards conservation in the country is extremely positive and this has meant that the country is now blessed with many national parks. Visitors can spot black and white rhino, elephant and lion in parks such as Mkhaya Game Reserve, Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, the Malolotja Nature Reserve and the Mlawula Nature Reserve. Activities include horse riding, white-water rafting and hiking as well as soaking up the Swazi lifestyle in a traditional village or the museum. King Mswati III has ruled since 1986, and the country is orderly and stable, although unfortunately it has a high HIV infection rate. Tourists will find that the value of the Lilangeni is similar to that of the South African Rand.
