Geography: Maun is situated along the Thamalakane River and is the gateway to the Okavango Delta.
History: Founded in 1915 and the capital of the Tawana tribe, the name Maun is derived from the San word 'maung', which means 'the place of short reeds'. Owing to Botswana's diamond wealth and the growth of the safari and tourism industry, the town has quickly developed from a rural village to a bustling modern metropolis. Today it is the third largest town in Botswana, the administrative centre of Ngamiland and is home to an interesting mix of modern buildings and traditional homesteads.
Arts and Culture: Although boasting good shopping centres, hotels and lodges Maun still retains a rural atmosphere and visitors will still be able to see local tribesmen selling their cattle and grazing their herds on the banks of the river.
Science and Nature: Maun has a tropical climate and that means that in summer things get hot! Visitors to the town can enjoy the small Maun Game Reserve which covers only 8km<\#178> of woodland, while the Okavango Delta and all its majestic natural sights and sounds are just a stone's throw away.
Entertainment: Maun is the tourism capital of Botswana and offers some of the best safari experiences. There is a host of outdoor entertainment on offer including horseback safaris and 4x4 tours that take tourists around the spectacular Okavanga Delta, known for its big game and dramatic scenery. In town there are shopping malls, banks, restaurants and some vibey bars.
Sport: Visitors can take many pleasant walks and hikes through the Maun Game Reserve.
