A farming centre 10km from the Lesotho border, this little town has spectacular views of the Maluti Mountains and the Witteberge. It was founded in 1892 and derives its name from the fact that so many Fouries lived in the area. There are a number of sandstone buildings in town including the oldest Nagmaal cottage, which is still occupied. Of interest in the vicinity are Meiringskloof Nature Reserve (start and finish of the 5-day Brandwater Hiking Trail), Bushman paintings, Salpeterkrans, one of the biggest natural caves in the southern hemisphere, and Surrender Hill where General Prinsloo surrendered to the British on 29th July 1900. The Information Centre houses a permanent exhibition on the Lesotho Highlands Water Project.
There are 4X4 trails, hiking, fly-fishing and horse-riding in the area.
