The resort village of Pennington lies on the South Coast, about 3km from the Mzinto River mouth.
The village is named after the Pennington family, farmers of the area in the 19th century. One of the early sugar magnates, Sir Frank Reynolds, bought a piece of the farm and built a holiday mansion on it. This was to be used exclusively for the prime ministers of South Africa. The mansion was called Botha House after General Louis Botha, who Reynolds admired.
This town, the centre of a large sugar cane and dairy farming district, offers many nature reserves, including Nkomba Bird Sanctuary, Nkumban Dam, Elysium Wetland, Ifafa Lagoon Estuary and Mkamati Dam. Visitors to the Vernon Crookes Nature Reserve can enjoy the fine coastal forest and grasslands as well as the impala, blue wildebeest, zebra and eland that wander through the reserve.
Visitors to Pennington will enjoy its splendid beach and tidal pool, which is great for swimming and sunning the body. Bazley Beach is popular with windsurfers, paragliders, jet skiers and anglers, while Rocky Bay, Umdoni Point, Kelso and Elysium are excellent for snorkelling.
For the traveller who needs to practice the golf swing, the Selborne Golf Course, one of the top courses in the country, will not disappoint.
