Back to Southern Africa

Mozambique, lying on the eastern coast of southern Africa is a country that is successfully rebuilding itself from a devastating past, and is once again becoming a popular tourist destination. With its tropical to subtropical climate, clear blue seas and wonderful scenery Mozambique is proving to be popular with tourists keen on game viewing, hiking and diving, and the wide range of accommodation will suit travellers on all types of budgets. Backpackers accommodation provides a mecca for young and student travellers, while families normally choose to stay at one of the many budget resort accommodation types. And for those who wish to be pampered, there are numerous luxury lodges and hotels found on both the mainland and the islands. South African tourists do not need a visa but should be in possession of a passport that will remain valid for six months after their return. Overseas visitors should check visa information before they leave. The country is also popular with bird-watchers, especially at the Maputo Elephant Reserve, situated right next to the ocean. Other attractions include the capital Maputo, set on a cliff overlooking a bay, with its bustling streets of wonderful architecture, to its great nightlife, as well as towns like Pemba, Beira and Ncala with the focus on sun, sea and surf. Tourists should however be warned that the civil war has left many landmines unexploded and that walking in the bush, especially in the wilder northern part of the mainland, without a guide is not a great idea. The safest bet is diving or snorkelling, at Barra or the Bazaruto Archipelago, with its amazing reefs. Tourists should be reminded to take malaria tablets and wear sunscreen! The arts and culture of Mozambique is quite fascinating, especially the traditional music played by the Makonde in the north and the Chopi musicians, famous for the marimba orchestra, in the south. The currency is Metical, which equals 100 Centavos.
