Geography: The well-established coastal town of Gonubie, on the lagoon at the Gonubie River Mouth, is situated just off the main East London/Durban N2 route, and is twenty minutes away from the city of East London.
History: In 1877, a few families of European descent who had been living in East London decided to settle in the area. The earliest record of Gonubie was made by Ensign Beutler in 1752, in which he tells the story of his men shooting a hippo on the banks of the river. In 1869 Sir Edward Brabant, an English Major General, bought the farm "Gonubie Park" for <\#163>4000, and visitors to the town can still see his original home. It was later, in 1933, that Mr Louis Rosenbaurn bought Gonubie Park and began selling plots for residential use. Since then the village has become known as an ideal holiday resort for those looking for peace and serenity.
Arts and Culture: Every Saturday visitors can take in the atmosphere of flea markets and craft fairs, while the annual Gonubie Festival is the perfect time to savour the local culture and traditions. The village's emblem, known as the "Gonubie Crest" depicts the sun rising over the sea, as well as displaying a leaping fish.
Science and Nature: The Gonubie Nature Reserve was established around a coastal wetland and is home to over 160 species of birds. When visiting the area, a popular activity is to navigate up the Gonubie River by boat and enjoy a picnic at the attractive picnic site. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Gonubie valley and the lagoon.
Entertainment: There is much to keep the boredom away in the beachside resort of Gonubie! At the beach with its large dunes and safe swimming waters, the 500m Boardwalk offers an advantageous position from which to enjoy the lovely view. Whales and dolphins can be spotted from here too, while beachcombing and shell collecting seem to be the more popular pastimes! And for those who are up for it, expert hiking trail guides take walkers through the beautiful riverine countryside on some of South Africa's most stunning hikes. Gonubie also offers some evening entertainment, including a couple of nightspots and restaurants.
Sport: The estuary at Gonubie River Mouth is abundant with marine life and most water sports can safely be performed on the river. Other sports that Gonubie offers are squash, tennis and lawn bowls.
Did you know? The village of Gonubie supposedly derived its name from a Khoe term for the brambleberry bush.
