Geography: Lanseria Airport is situated on the R512 north of Johannesburg.
History: In 1974 two pilots, Fanie Haacke and Abe Sher, identified the need for an airport to the northwest of Johannesburg and proposed to the then minister of transport, Hannes Rall. It was launched soon after and has become a very popular port with many international flights arriving here too. The airport, with its spotless white and metal terminals, handles about 160,000 passengers a year.
Arts and Culture: Lanseria is the closest airport to the World Heritage Site of The Cradle of Mankind, as well as being the chosen port of entry for many diplomatic aircraft.
Science and Nature: Lanseria is close to the rural, unspoilt surroundings of Hartebeespoort Dam, and to the bright lights of two cities - Johannesburg and Sun City.
Did You Know? Lanseria was named after the Afrikaans word 'lanseer' which means "to launch".
