Geography: Musina is only 16km from the Zimbabwe border and as such is the northernmost town in South Africa. It lies 2,000km from Cape Town.

History: Musina is essentially a mining town, and always has been. There is evidence that shows that prehistoric people were mining copper and iron, while the more modern history of the mining starts in the late 1800's. Originally known as Messina, the new name of Musina is a Venda word meaning "the spoiler" and refers to the copper traces in the iron ore that spoils the wanted iron. After a substantial amount of prospective copper was found, companies were set up and municipal status was granted in 1968.

Arts and Culture: Visitors to Musina can enjoy the rich archaeological, historical and cultural legacy of the area's inhabitants, both old and new. The hills surrounding the town contain magnificent San rock art, while the ruins of Stone and Iron-Age villages may be visited.

Science and Nature: The town is possibly best known for its magnificent baobab trees. Visitors can see these trees, some over a thousand years old and hollowed out to make restaurants and bars, just south of town in the Baobab Reserve. Not far from Musina is South Africa's most recently proclaimed national park, Vhembe Dongola, on the banks of the Limpopo River. Within the parks boundaries, the Sand River Gneiss, rocky outcrops that at 3,850 million years old, are of the oldest rock formations in the world. Visitors can also see Mapungubwe, an archaeological heritage site dating back to around 1200 AD.

Entertainment: If you are in Musina in August, then be sure to visit the annual Agricultural Show.

Sport: For those travellers who brought their clubs, there is a golf course in town, while other sporting facilities include tennis, bowls and badminton.

Did You Know? The Sand River Gneiss is one of the world's geological wonders and was created almost at the same time as Earth.
