Geography: The warm and fertile town of Brits lies 50km northwest of Pretoria.
History: Brits was founded on 25 May 1924 on the farm Roode Kopjes and named after the owner, Gert Brits. When the Hartbeespoort Dam was filled for the first time in 1925 it gave the town a massive boost, as water from the dam could be used for irrigation. A variety of crops were planted including tobacco, citrus, wheat, vegetables and table grapes. Brits, having gained municipal status in 1944, is today an important centre for the farming of crops and cattle as well as having a wide range of industries including motor engineering, gas and the production of optical fibre. Mining also occurs in the area and high quality granite, chrome, magnetite and iron ore are mined from the earth.
Arts & Culture: Visitors who are interested in culture and tradition will enjoy a trip to the Mabhoko Ndebele Cultural Village in Mabopane, about 30km northeast of Brits. At the village tourists can have a look at interesting cultural paintings as well as the brightly painted traditional dwellings, or invest in the local culture by buying a handmade curio. Another place of cultural interest is the Vredesboom, or "Peace Tree" under which negotiations took place after the Battle of the Crocodile in 1864. The karee tree is about 7km outside of Brits.
Science & Nature: Brits lies in a fertile area and with irrigation supplied by the Hartbeespoort Dam, is a large citrus-producing area. Natural attractions of the town include the 40,000ha Vaalkop Dam Nature Reserve where bird-watchers can spot over 340 species! The De Wildt Cheetah Research Centre, which specialises in breeding cheetah and other endangered species including wild dog, has daily tours that take visitors around the facilities of the centre.
Entertainment: Famous herbalist Margaret Roberts has her wonderful herb garden in Brits, and visitors can view the garden and buy her herbal products. There are also lectures and demonstrations that the public can attend. The farm is open to the public on Wednesdays. Le Croc Tours will take tourists to an interesting crocodile farm where the snappy reptiles will provide great entertainment for the whole family.
Sport: There is much to do for the sportsman in Brits. Not far from town is the Hartbeespoort Dam where water sport is extremely popular. Sailing, boating and water-skiing are just some of the activities to try. For the traveller who packed golf clubs, there is an excellent golf course.
Did you know? The local high school has its own nature reserve.
