Geography: Hartbeespoort Dam, surrounded by the majestic Magaliesberg Mountain Range, is situated on the Crocodile River and its short distance from the major towns of Gauteng makes it an ideal weekend getaway spot. It is a 30-minute drive from Fourways and Randburg and 20 minutes on the toll road from Pretoria. The little village of Kosmos lies on the west bank of the dam.
History: The irrigation dam of Hartbeestpoort was completed in 1923 and started flowing out in 1925. The area developed into an attractive recreational area and before long had residential developments springing up on its shores. One of these residential areas is the little village of Kosmos with its collection of cottages and getaways. Rumour has it that the founder of the village was rowing on the dam in the light of the moon when he was reminded by the reflections on the water of the universe. Kosmos, as it became known, is about 9km from the dam wall.
Arts & Culture: Visitors to Hartbeestpoort Dam can take a trip to Lesedi, a multicultural village set amongst the pristine bushveld and rocky hills. At the village there are four traditional homesteads including Zulu, Xhosa, Pedi and Basotho. Visitors are afforded a unique opportunity of staying with a rural African family, but with modern amenities like hot water and cosy beds being part of the package! The area around the Hartbeespoort Dam is a favourite locality for artists, and paintings, sculptures, handmade dolls, furniture and a wide variety of original clothing may be purchased. The Magalies Meander is an arts and crafts route and includes many galleries that sell art and crafts including the Kosmos Art Gallery in Paul Kruger Street.
Science & Nature: Hartbeespoort Dam irrigates 16,000 hectares of cultivated land and the water provides extensive recreational facilities. The largest freshwater aquarium in Africa is at Hartbeespoort and has an amazing collection of indigenous and exotic fish. The whole area is a geological wonderland and not far from the dam are the Sterkfontein and Wonder caves, famous for their fossils and artefacts that prove this area to be the cradle of mankind.
Entertainment: Hartbeestpoort is a brilliant recreational area and the many activities keep families easily entertained. Camping grounds, amusement parks and colourful craft markets have been developed around the dam while the aquarium, zoo and snake park are close by. For a bird's eye view of the area visitors can choose the cable car that takes passengers on a six-minute ride, an unforgettable trip on a hot-air balloon, or view the spectacular scenery from a low altitude in a fixed-wing aircraft. All three provide stunning views of the mountains and nature. There are many restaurants and special pubs in the area, including a floating restaurant on the dam.
Sport: Hartbeestpoort Dam is most famous for its water sport and recreational facilities. A local has even been overheard calling it "Johannesburg's Seaside"! It is a haven for the water sport enthusiast and activities including parasailing, windsurfing and jet skiing may be enjoyed from the small freshwater marina. If golf is your game, then the two excellent golf courses in the area will provide great entertainment. Hartbeespoort has a strong rock climbing tradition and the 8m climbing wall with its six different routes will have enthusiasts in shape and ready for the real thing, while the annual 50km Om-die-Dam Marathon held in March is a perfect warm-up for the Comrades Marathon run three months later.
