Geography: This small farming town is the gateway to the magnificent Augrabies Falls, which lie on the mighty Orange River some 25km away.
History: The 49, 000ha Augrabies Falls National Park was established in 1966, and the name is derived from the Khoe word aukurabis, which means "the water that thunders".
Arts and Culture: The pool at the bottom of the Falls has many myths and legends surrounding it and while it is virtually impossible to get to, it is mythically believed to contain a massive amount of diamonds. Another legend that surrounds the pool is that it is home to a giant river monster.
Science and Nature: The Falls are an awesome sight to behold, as the water thunders down into the 18km abyss of the Orange River Gorge. The river drops 191m, which makes it one of the largest cataract type waterfalls in the world. Besides the magnificent and noisy Falls, visitors can see colourful lizards basking on the rocks and other interesting wildlife. The area is known for it's arid desert climate and visitors can see the kokerboom, or quiver trees, that grow here. The Park also is home to a game reserve that boasts rhino.
Entertainment: Visitors who don't have the time for a full hike can take a leisurely 2.5km stroll to the gorge's edge, with magnificent views from Twin Falls and Arrow Point. Further walks include the one to Moon Rock, which takes about an hour, and another to the Potholes, which is half an hour longer.
Sport: The Klipspringer Hiking Trail is challenging stuff indeed, but for those who go on it there are fabulous scenic treats in store. It is a three-day hike and due to the high temperatures hikers are advised to take a hat and plenty of water.
Did You Know? The Niagara Falls in America is also a cataract type of waterfall, and is about 50m high.
