Geography: The Park's entrance gate is some 250km from Upington, with the last stretch on gravel road. On the South African side of the Park, travel is made along two dry ancient river beds, with a dune road linking the more northern camps.
History: The former Kalahari Gemsbok National Park was amalgamated with Botswana's Gemsbok Park in April 1999, to be known as Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, the first officially-sanctioned Transfrontier Park in Africa.
Science & Nature: This massive 3.6-million hectare conservation area encompasses red sand dunes, Kalahari scrub and arid savannah and represents one of the best game-viewing and wildlife photography opportunities on the planet. Large herds of antelope such as springbok, gemsbok, wildebeest and eland are preyed on by Africa's large carnivores, typified by the famous Kalahari lions. The Park is also renowned for its birds of prey, for enormous sociable weaver nests, for bustling families of meerkat and for the night-time pulse of barking geckos.
