Geography: With a pretty stretch of beach, Port Nolloth can be subject to cold water, mists and some heavy August winds but the weather is generally mild and pleasant. The town is the base for marine diamond exploration. Together with its holiday resort, McDougall's Bay, it is known for its abundant crayfish or rock lobster, to be enjoyed while watching the copper sun set on Port Nolloth's diamond sea.
History: Formerly known as Aukwatowa ('where the water took the old man away' in Namib), later as Robbe Baai and then as Seal Bay, Port Nolloth was virtually uninhabited until the discovery of copper inland at Okiep. The town was named after Commander Nolloth, RN, who came to measure the depth of the harbour for exporting copper ore on the northwestern Cape coast.
