Geography: East London is situated on the east coast of South Africa between Durban and Port Elizabeth at the mouth of the Buffalo River, and is known as the gateway to the Sunshine Coast and the Wild Coast.
History: East London was originally developed as a supply port to serve the military headquarters at King Williams' Town.
Arts and Culture: The East London Museum has many fascinating exhibits including the world's only extant Dodo egg, and a model of the ancient dinosaur fish, the coelacanth, some of which were caught alive in the deep waters off East London. The city is home to the oldest aquarium in South Africa, and visitors can see the more than 400 species of fish, penguins and seals; try spotting whales through the telescope at the Whale Watching Deck! Visitors can also delve into the local cultures and traditions at the Khaya La Bantu Cultural Village 30km from East London where Xhosa music, dancing, traditional fare and the potent local brew, Mqomboti, can be sampled. Back in the city, the centre's principal landmark is the City Hall opened in 1899 and built in the Victorian Renaissance style, while the Clock Tower commemorates the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria.
Science and Nature: From East London visitors are afforded easy access to a diversity of unique landscapes, pristine beaches and natural treasures, including five major biomes. The beaches of East London and surrounds are often regarded as among the finest in the world.
Entertainment: East London hosts many major annual events and festivals including the Harbour Festival, the East London Agricultural Show - now in its 55th year, the Gonubie Arts Festival, and the glittering fireworks display at the December Beachfront Festival. Those looking for entertainment can catch comedy, drama and music at the Guild Theatre or at the Arts Theatre. If you feel that lady luck is smiling on you, why don't you try your luck at Hemingway's Casino? If being outdoors is your thing then visitors can take up the challenge of hikes and walks in the region, or spend the day at Orient Beach which has bathing areas, a waterslide, two circular pools, a children's playground, a paddling pool, restaurants and a minigolf course.
Sport: East London is renowned for its excellent surfing conditions and the beaches have the most consistent swell in the country. Inland, the East London Golf Course has hosted six South African Opens, and justifies the high esteem in which the course is held. The course was the chosen venue for the Mercedes Benz SA Open Golf Tournament in January 2001.
Did you know? East London's port on the mouth of the Buffalo River is the only river port in South Africa.
