Dundee is situated roughly midway between Johannesburg and Durban just off the N3, and nestles in the picturesque Biggarsberg. The historic town is about 350km from Johannesburg and about 280km from Durban. Dundee is steeped in a fascinating history with a strong military flavour. Originally a centre of intense coal mining, the village was laid out on the farm Dundee. Only one of these mines is open today, but the legacy lingers on in the museums in the town. Later, the village was the scene of the first engagement of the South African (Anglo-Boer) War. This took place on and around Talana Hill. Dundee was also the site of the Battle of Blood River, fought to avenge the assassination of the Boer leader Piet Retief. Now known as the Day of Reconciliation, there are three monuments on the site that commemorate the 16th of December. Tourists to Dundee can visit the reconstructed battle site at Blood River, which dramatically illustrates the firepower and military strategy in one of the most famous battles in South African history. The monument consists of 64 replica Voortrekker wagons cast in bronze and replicas of the three cannons, all of which have been preserved in exactly the same position as in the original battle.
