The residential and resort town of Umhlanga Rocks is located about 20km north of the Durban city centre along the old North Coast road.The Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve protects a strip of coastal forest, and the 76ha Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve, established on the banks of the Mngeni River, is now used as an environment education centre. The beaches of Umhlanga have Blue Flag status and are excellent for the whole family to enjoy. Safe swimming, surfing and fishing are popular activities. For those looking for a bit of nightlife, there are numerous clubs and pubs in the town, and the bright lights of the Durban beachfront are not too far away.
