The N10 from Port Elizabeth to Colesberg is the quickest route to Gauteng along the N1. If you have time and wish to savour the heart of the Karoo, take the longer but more scenic R75 via Wolwefontein and Jansenville (mohair country) to Graaff-Reinet. Here you join the N9 which passes Nieu Bethesda en route to Middelburg and Colesberg.
Drive out of PE along the N2 to the village of Colchester in the direction of the Addo Elephant National Park . The N10 junction follows soon hereafter and it travels north through the village of Paterson and winds its way over the mountains through an arid landscape that prevails until the agricultural centre of Middleton where the Great Fish River shows the effects of its irrigation of the valley! Some 25km west off the N10 at Cookhouse is Somerset East, at the foot of the Bosberg, where invigorating walks await you.
Some 70km north along the N10, Cradock is a treasure trove of historic buildings with the added attractions of its sulphur springs, the charming Mountain Zebra National Park and the memorial to 'The Cradock Four', anti-apartheid activists. Crossing the vast expanse of the Karoo – relieved by the Great Fish River - the N10 joins the N9 at Middelburg, a centre for exploring the well-preserved fossils in the area. Join the N1 to Gauteng at Colesberg, 100km north of Middelburg.
